Sibling Doula Support

Supporting Older Siblings during Birth & Postpartum

Welcoming a new baby is a big transition for the entire family — especially older siblings. Our Sibling Doula Services provide dedicated care and emotional support for your children during labor, birth, and the early postpartum period so parents can focus on birth and recovery with peace of mind.

We help children feel included, prepared, and secure during this exciting change in their family.

How a Sibling Doula Helps During Labor

When labor begins, we come to your home (or meet you at the birth location if appropriate) to care for your children and maintain their normal routine as much as possible. This may include:

  • Preparing meals and snacks

  • Playing games and activities

  • Reading books

  • Helping with bedtime routines

  • Providing comfort and reassurance

  • Taking them to school or activities

  • Keeping parents updated

Our goal is to keep your children feeling safe, calm, and cared for while you focus on bringing your new baby into the world.

Support During Birth

If you plan for your child to be present during labor or birth, we provide attentive, age-appropriate support to ensure a positive and comfortable experience. We stay by their side, helping them feel safe, informed, and included. This may include:

  • Explaining what is happening in a calm, child-friendly way

  • Offering reassurance if things feel intense or unfamiliar

  • Providing distractions like books, toys, or quiet activities

  • Supporting emotional expression (questions, feelings, curiosity)

  • Stepping out with them if they need a break

  • Advocating for their needs while honoring your birth preferences

Our role is to create a supportive bridge between the birth experience and your child’s understanding, so they feel secure and positively connected to the moment.

Preparing Siblings for a New Baby

We also offer sibling preparation visits before the birth. These visits help children understand what to expect and feel excited and confident about their new role. Preparation may include:

  • Talking about birth in age-appropriate ways

  • Practicing holding a baby doll

  • Reading sibling books

  • Discussing what baby will be like

  • Talking about changes in the home

  • Helping them pick a gift for baby

  • Helping baby pick a gift for sibling

Postpartum Sibling Support

After baby arrives, older siblings sometimes need extra attention and support as they adjust. We can help by:

  • Spending one-on-one time with siblings

  • Helping with outings and activities

  • Assisting with routines

  • Helping siblings feel included with baby care

  • Providing emotional support during the transition

  • Giving parents time to rest and bond with baby

Why Families Use a Sibling Doula

Families often choose sibling doula services so that:

  • Children remain comfortable in their own home

  • Parents can focus fully on labor and birth

  • Siblings feel included instead of left out

  • The transition to a new baby is smoother

  • Parents have extra support during postpartum recovery

Supporting older siblings during this transition can reduce anxiety, prevent behavioral regressions, and help build a strong bond between siblings from the very beginning.
